Allyl Alcohol Plant Heat Integration Project

 

PRESENTATION SYNOPSIS

This project involved the installation of 2 heat exchangers, H-150 and H-152, to recover heat from reaction zone to heat up distillation zone to reduce heating and cooling utilities. This heat integration was conducted at Allyl Alcohol (AAL) process.

 

The chemical reaction involved in the AAL process is exothermic, resulting in high energy content in reactor R-101A/B output. The reactor outlet has two stages of heat integration to reduce the heat content before the heat is being rejected to atmosphere. Based on the heat source temperature, the rejected heat is considered a good grade heating source.

 

AAL plant is designed with distillation units, which are operated with steam, to recover raw material and purify product. After analysis, the rejected heat from the reaction zone can be used to heat up distillation tower T-305 feed and T-451 bottom to reduce steam consumption. Feasibility study indicated that the project payback period was less than one year.

 

After addressing quality, environmental and process safety risk pertaining to scope modification, the project proceeded to engineering design in 2018. The project was completed and commissioned on 12 Nov 2019. The project worked as expected and the overall energy consumption was reduced.

Keynote - Moving Forward on Singapore Decarbonization

 

PRESENTATION SYNOPSIS

The recent SG Green Plan 2030 is a call for action for all of us, and that one company or the government cannot solve the problem alone. We would have to work together and a wider call for action is required to make a difference.

 

NEA's initiative to execute the Energy Performance of Heating Systems in Oil Refining, Petrochemical and Chemical Plants is a great milestone. Many Energy and Chemical Industry players have accepted to participate in the study and the study identified an economical feasible reduction of 130,000 tpa of CO2. Putting the results on a wider context, this is equivalent to 0.5% of the total Singapore Industry emissions, the study has only scratched the surface of the issue.

 

In the midst of the NEA Energy Performance of Heating Systems study the COVID-19 arrived. As stated by IEA, “The Covid-19 crisis added a new layer of uncertainty for global energy efficiency efforts”. Against a backdrop of slow energy efficiency improvements, the Covid-19 crisis adds a new layer of uncertainty. The current economic crisis threatens to delay investments by businesses and households in more efficient technologies. While investments may not have changed significantly yet (particularly as projects are often agreed years in advance), the resilience of investments will be tested in the coming years.

 

In the meantime, several countries and corporations have introduced targets to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. Increasingly attention is turning to what it would mean for the energy sector globally to reach net-zero emissions by 2050 and Energy Efficiency will be one of the pillars to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.

 

At the same time, the Singapore Energy Industry’s Value Add has been declining and over the past 10 years, the total value of both the refinery and the chemical manufacturing sector have declined by 63% in Singapore’s GDP contribution terms. In a context of falling revenues asking the Industry to invest more to reduce emissions is a tough call.

 

And we all know that a wider call for action is required to make a difference. From a preliminary analysis of the data available including the 11 sites, KBR have identified an additional 270,000 tpa CO2 reduction and based on KBR previous experience of executing multi-site energy optimization studies, we believe the CO2 reduction could go up to 800,000 tpa, this is 6X of the savings currently identified by the NEA project.

 

We will need a wider Industry players participation, co-operation and belief; Energy Transition and Decarbonization efforts are synonymous to Private Public Partnership. One Company or one Government alone cannot solve the problem, we must work altogether

 

The NEA Heating Study is just the beginning of a longer journey towards the vision of a decarbonized Energy Industry in Singapore and being Singapore an Export Energy Hub then we all have the same incentive to remain competitive and committed to a sustainable world.

Olefins Compressors Surge Margin Reduction

 

PRESENTATION SYNOPSIS

The major compressor turbine is one of the largest equipment at ExxonMobil’s Singapore Chemical Plant Olefins unit and consumes a significant amount of steam to compress the process gas. Typically, these centrifugal compressors have a kickback control valve to prevent the compressor from going into surge and thereby damaging the compressor internals. The surge margin is the buffer between the actual surge line and surge control line, which is an additional safety feature that triggers the opening of the kickback valve. However, doing so results in a loss of energy.

 

As part of ExxonMobil Global Energy Management System (GEMS) best practices, the project team evaluated opportunities for energy efficiency during turndown operation. After evaluation and subsequent test runs, the team was able to further pinch down on the compressor surge margin and reduce the process gas being recycled from discharge to suction. This results in savings of steam consumed by the compressor turbines.

Automation for Sustainability – ‘How To’ Guide for Your Existing (and New) Plant

 

PRESENTATION SYNOPSIS

Plants are looking to become ‘greener’ and more sustainable. But changing from fossil fuel, using other catalyst, or modifying process equipment is disruptive and costly. So too building carbon capture. Yet fossil-based plants will be around for a long time and need to further improve energy efficiency and reduce emissions. COVID safe management measures make makes manual energy management impractical.

 

Digital transformation of energy management and loss control activities in the plant is a less disruptive way to improve sustainability. And it is easy if done right. As part of digitalization plants deploy Energy Management Information System (EMIS) which must include additional flow meters for submetering on every branch to be effective. Selecting the right type of flow meter for each stream is key. Similarly, performance analytics software for heat exchangers, cooling towers, air cooled heat exchangers, and other equipment, plus loss control analytics for relief valves and steam traps all must include the associated non-intrusive wireless sensors to pick up required raw data reliably.

 

Using additional automation, existing and new fossil-based plants become more efficient and produce less emissions than their traditional counterparts, thus doing their part for sustainability. Automated EMIS, performance monitoring, and condition monitoring reduces the need for manual data collection, reduces the need for personnel and contractors, helping social distancing. And since it is digital, you can work on the EMIS and analytics software from home or from a central location. This monitoring can also be outsourced to third parties that monitors steam traps and other equipment for you remotely without sending personnel to site. So these solutions make us both more resilient and sustainable. Greener, more profitable, and more competitive.

 

But success hinges on doing it right. With the wrong approach it will be a small trial and no more. This session will reveal the details to be engineered including some examples of readymade digital automation solutions. This session will have a ‘how-to’ format presenting readymade solutions (not concepts or visions) sharing functional block diagrams, not conceptual models. Compressed air systems are commonly used in industrial facilities and account for a substantial amount of energy consumed by manufacturing facilities. Studies have shown that compressed air systems have potential for energy savings in the region of 20-50%. In most installations, no or inadequate measurement and verification (M&V) system is available to monitor the energy performance of compressed air systems. Hence, it is not possible to benchmark energy performance of compressed air systems or to identify measures to improve system performance. Thus, a new Singapore Standard covering the requirements for long term measurement of compressed air system energy efficiency was developed. The presentation will cover the background to the standard and an overview of the content of the standard.

Temperature control is a key factor in many manufacturing processes. Cooling tower water is used extensively in plastics processing industry, to regulate processing temperatures.

 

However, scaling minerals forming on heat exchange surfaces serves as heat insulators, making it difficult for manufacturers to achieve required temperatures. This causes heating or cooling equipment to work harder, consuming more energy, while also affecting product quality.

 

We will share a case study from a local plastic injection molder who have achieved significant better processing temperatures, lowered energy and water use by better managing the quality of cooling tower water.

Professor Lock has a unique blend of practicing and academic experience acquired through a career which is equally split between the industry and the academia. He received his B.Sc. (1st Class Honours) in Electrical and Electronics Engineering in 1975 from the University of Strathclyde, UK. He joined the National University of Singapore as a lecturer in 1980 and was the Head of its Power and Machines Division, Department of Electrical Engineering, when he left in 1997 to set up his consulting practice. He is a specialist in motors and variable-speed drives. He has authored over 200 consultancy reports, including performance and failure analysis of motors used in chiller plant and marine propulsion.

 

After 19 years in consulting practice, he returned to the academia in 2016 as a Professor at Singapore Institute of Technology. He plays an active role in energy efficiency, being the Chairman of Accreditation Committee for Energy Service Companies (ESCOs) and the Co-Chair of Steering Committee of Singapore Certified Energy Managers (SCEM) Scheme. He received the Public Service Medal (2015) and the Public Service Star (2020). He is a Fellow of Academy of Engineering, Singapore, Senior Fellow of ASEAN Academy of Engineering and Technology and Honorary Fellow of ASEAN Federation of Engineering Organizations.

Luigi’s start in the self storage industry was as the founding Executive Director of the Self Storage Association Asia (SSAA) in 2014, growing it to a globally recognized regional industry body.  Previously, Luigi managed one of the largest business communities in Hong Kong with The Canadian Chamber of Commerce, worked closely with the real estate community at CBRE, and engaged regional organizations for CSR and intellectual property purposes while at Time Warner.

 

An Executive MBA graduate from the National University of Singapore and an International Relations undergrad from the University of British Columbia in Canada, he was a previous scuba diving instructor and is now married with two beautiful, curious daughters.

Performance of Heating Systems in Singapore

 

PRESENTATION SYNOPSIS

Operations of heating systems constitute a significant energy consumption in the industrial sector. Understanding the performance of your heating system is the first step towards improving its efficiency and stepping towards a less carbon intensive operation in the industrial sector.

 

In the Heating System Study project commissioned by the National Environment Agency (NEA), the assessment methodology of each heating system is now standardised. Lasting over 22 months of project execution, KBR has assessed hundreds of potential opportunities with the 11 participating plants across the refining, petrochemical and chemical sectors. 40 opportunities have been shortlisted for implementation considerations, equivalent to 27 million SGD/year of cost savings and 130, 000 tpa of carbon abatement potential.

 

Also through this study, KBR sees untapped carbon abatement potential that can be realised by leveraging on synergies of energy systems among a cluster of plants. A larger scale integration of energy systems will bring about more significant cost savings and carbon abatement.

Danone implemented a best-in-class energy management software to visualize and analyse in real-time any kind of data related to energy, process, production and weather.

 

By creating real-time baselines, Metron support Danone in detecting any abnormal drift in energy consumption and in calculating savings related to any actions. Metron is also providing to Danone services of energy and data science experts in order to identify potential energy savings (on processes like spray dryer or on utilities like compressors).

 

The platform is pushing in real-time energy optimization actions to operators or managers (energy wastage or leakage detection, sequencing or regulation optimization) in order to engage everybody on the sustainability journey.

The industrial sector is expected to account for more than half of the projected GHG emissions in 2030, and has the largest potential for GHG emissions reduction. Since 2018, the Energy Conservation Act was enhanced to promote energy management discipline from facility development stage for companies investing in new ventures.  While the traditional mindset of a new venture design is to minimise capital cost, the Energy Efficiency Opportunities Assessment for New Ventures (EEOA-NV) requires companies to focus on energy efficiency/conservation and implement cost-efficient opportunities. This presentation summarises the results of EEOA-NV reports submitted in 2019 and 2020 and lists the common causes observed in poor quality EEOA-NV submissions. More importantly, best practices of a good EEOA-NV are highlighted for adoption by industry practitioners and owners of new ventures.
